Dried root is often an ingredient in herbal mixtures designed to soothe a disturbed stomach or help remedy diarrhea. The roots are considered a valued and palatable food source. They are very nutritious. “Young rhizomes and seeds yield Chinese Arrowroot, a starch made into a porridge for diarrhea and dysentery.”
A tonic of the root is useful in settling one’s stomach, useful in treating diarrhea and believed helpful in for hemorrhoids. Simmer two tablespoons of ground root in one cup of milk or soy milk for 10 minutes. Stir to avoid sticking. The tonic may be flavored with cinnamon and spices, sweetened with honey.
