Thyme
Thymus vulgaris

“Bronchitis. Taking thyme orally, in combination with other herbs, seems to help improve symptoms associated with bronchitis. Some preliminary clinical evidence suggests that taking an herbal cough syrup containing thyme, anise, dry ivy leaf, and mucilage from marshmallow root (Weleda Cough Elixier) improves symptoms of bronchitis, including the strength of cough and the amount and consistency of sputum produced, compared to baseline in patients with bronchitis. Other clinical research suggests that thyme, in combination with cowslip (Bronchipret), relieves symptoms of bronchitis, including coughing and fever, and increases production of sputum. Also, taking 30 drops of extract from thyme and cowslip root (Bronchicum Drops) five times daily or 5mL of thyme extract plus cowslip root tincture (Bronchicum Elixir S) six times daily for 7-9 days seems to reduce symptoms of acute bronchitis and shorten the duration of acute bronchitis compared to placebo. Also taking 16.2 mL of a syrup containing English ivy leaf and thyme (Bronchipret Saft) daily significantly reduces the frequency of coughing fits and the duration of symptoms compared to placebo in patients with acute bronchitis.
“In children and adolescents, preliminary clinical evidence suggests that taking syrup containing thyme and ivy leaf extract (Bronchipret Saft) for 10 days seems to help reduce the severity of symptoms, including coughing fits, compared to baseline in patients with acute bronchitis.
“Cough. Taking thyme orally, in combination with other herbs, seems to help reduce coughing in patients with bronchitis, upper respiratory infections, or common colds. Some preliminary clinical evidence suggests that taking an herbal cough syrup containing thyme, anise, dry ivy leaf, and mucilage from marshmallow root (Weleda Cough Elixier) improves cough symptoms compared to baseline in patients with bronchitis or a common cold. Other clinical research suggests that thyme, in combination with cowslip (Bronchipret), relieves coughing in patients with bronchitis. Also, taking 30 drops of extract from thyme and cowslip root (Bronchicum Drops) five times daily or 5mL of thyme extract plus cowslip root tincture (Bronchicum Elixir S) six times daily for 7-9 days reduces coughing in patients with acute bronchitis. Taking 16.2 mL of syrup containing English ivy leaf and thyme (Bronchipret Saft) daily reduces the frequency of coughing fits compared to placebo in patients with acute bronchitis                             . Also, some preliminary clinical research suggests that administering thyme syrup to patients with uncomplicated respiratory tract infections alleviates cough complaints similarly to the mucolytic agent bromhexine.
In children and adolescents, preliminary clinical evidence suggests that taking syrup containing thyme and ivy leaf extract (Bronchipret Saft) for 10 days seems to help reduce coughing fit severity compared to baseline in patients with acute bronchitis.”
