“The applicable parts of lobelia are the above ground parts. Lobelia has some anti-asthmatic, antispasmodic, emetic, expectorant, and respiratory stimulant effects. The primary constituent, (-)-lobeline, is known as alpha lobeline, to distinguish it from the mixture of lobelia alkaloids formerly called lobeline. Alpha lobeline is a partial nicotine agonist with effects on the peripheral circulation, neuromuscular system and central nervous system (CNS). Small amounts of lobeline stimulate respiration and have expectorant activity. Larger amounts have emetic, purgative, and diuretic effects. Lobeline first causes CNS stimulation then CNS and respiratory depression.” (NatMed Database)
